Black & White, located in the Heights, recently invited out members of the Houston Food Blogger Collective for a private tasting. Locally owned and operated, Black & White offers diners a choice of ambiance and two distinct menus. The Black side is intimate and upscale with a Mediterranean inspired cuisine and the White side is a more casual atmosphere with a seafood focused menu. Luckily you are able to order from both menus regardless of which side you choose to dine.
I was very impressed with the beverage program at Black & White. The servers are all well versed in the cocktails and wine and are able to provide diners with excellent recommendations. The cocktails are nicely balanced and showcase each flavor without masking the taste of the spirit. The Roasted Blueberry and Basil Bourbon Martini was very sophisticated, but I preferred the bold flavors and spice of the Hot Mess. Wine drinkers will be pleased with the selection of Italian and Spanish wines. Being a California wine lover, I was excited to see offerings from smaller boutique wineries such as Alpha Omega, Jigar, and Sempre Vive.
Both menus at Black & White offer appetizers, soups, salads, and pastas. Entrees on the Black side feature beef, pork, and duck. Paella for 4-6 people can be ordered as a specialty dish. The White side menu has fresh seafood entrees. Ceviches, oysters, and carpaccios are delicately prepared with just a touch of spice. The most impressive dish was the Nostro Polpo, lightly seasoned octopus cooked to perfection.
In addition to two distinct dining spaces, Black & White has three bar areas, a terrace, and a secluded Cava room for private parties. Each side of the restaurant, as well as the entire restaurant is available to rent. Black & White is currently open for dinner Monday - Saturday 5-10 pm and on Sunday for Brunch 11 am - 4 pm. Complimentary valet and self parking is available.
